Jah9

The shift in Jah9’s world and story, began at an early age of 9 when she moved from her home in Falmouth, to live in the urban wilds of Kingston. Born Janine Cunningham, she later came to accept the childhood nickname Jah9. The powerhouse vocalist we have come to know and love, only emerged from her musical cocoon post initiation into the literary world through poetry. Her love for the written word helped her to channel some of the dynamic thoughts she began to have later on in her life, during her tenure at the University Of The West Indies. Here, she was able to nourish the growing consciousness instilled in her by her father the preacher and her mother, the social worker. She found kinship in the like minds of the Rastafari brethren she came to know during her time there, where she developed a keen reverence for Haile Selassie I. She became a staple in the underground poetry scene by 2009, where she also fell in love with the hypnotic sounds of dub in roots reggae music. She started to write songs to these instrumentals where she felt confident her words would have room for digestion, and they found eager encouragement. Her first demos were recorded with keyboardist Sheldon Bernard, and caught the attention of the legendary Beres Hammond who later helped to develop her recording technique. 9 recorded her first two singles with the help of Donovan Bennett of Don Corleon Records in 2010 to critical acclaim. She would later release her debut album titled “New Name” in 2013, produced by iconic selector Rory ‘Stone Love’ Gilligan, which spoke to the core
of her philosophy as a human being and artist. There she was able to project the messages she unearth throughout her spiritual journey. “New Name” was voted album of the year by AchisReggae.com, warmly described as “the superb sum of its parts: a straight cultural roots album”. 9 has performed with her band, the Dub Treatment, on stages and music festivals all over the world since then and even incorporates her popular rhythm based experience called Yoga on Dub, to supplement. Her words are a reflection of her life and the ways she chooses to direct her energies. All her pursuits, whether music or otherwise, culminate into a livity, a mission to heal, nourish and grow through her powers as a woman, yogi, poet, artist and activist. In 2016 Jah9 released her follow up effort titled simply “9” which cemented her innovative Jazz on Dub style. 9 continues to push the boundaries of the world she was born in as she forges her path. The next steps in her journey are currently being curated for the staging of her next great body of music.

Bumpin Uglies

Bumpin Uglies spawned from an Annapolis, MD scene awash in musical history over a decade ago. They are rooted in East Coast ska, punk, and reggae, making their mark up and down the Eastern Seaboard. In the past ten years, Bumpin Uglies have worked to carve out their path by relentlessly touring, and releasing one album after another. With each release came more focus, more creativity and more desire to always experiment and try new things with their music. The band is psyched for their latest EP, Buzz, which released on March 22 via Ineffable Music Group based in Oakland, CA. Ineffable is a name synonymous with the likes of Collie Buddz, Stick Figure, The Movement, and many other prominent artists.

Their last album, Beast From The East, is proof positive that Brandon, Wolfie, Chad and T.J. have meshed into a dynamic quartet as the album topped reggae charts, drawing interest from Billboard’s editorial team for their debut in the pole position. With fellow Maryland rocker Howi Spangler of Ballyhoo! working on the production, the alchemy was right for their breakthrough release, so naturally they are keeping that intact with their current album, Buzz, while continuing the trend of evolving their sound, always experimenting in bold ways that keeps everything fresh from beginning to end.

Their climb hasn’t always been easy and as Bumpin Uglies have grinded their way to their current place in the music scene, they’ve shown that hard work pays off and by putting your heart and soul into it and by taking risks, you can achieve great things. It’s why they’ve springboarded from The Whiskey in Annapolis (RIP) to slots at major festivals like Firefly, Peachfest, and Reggae Rise Up, and are selling out several markets around the nation. Bumpin Uglies are also proud to have announced the return of their own Headlining Festival, Weekend at Wolfie’s, set for June 11-13, 2020 in Bedford, PA.

As a band they are clearly intent on doing things their own way, it’s how it’s always been done.  This philosophy has grown Bumpin Uglies into a prolific music-making beast, has devoted fans tattooing Brandon Hardesty’s poignant lyrics on their bodies and has them growing into a nationally recognized touring headliner. Bumpin Uglies is on fire with no end in site.

Their only choice has always been mind over matter, and time has proven that their unbending positive outlook, combined with an inspiring message of love and hope, has not only helped them overcome personal hardship, but catapulted their music onto the world stage with an unstoppable momentum.

Paul Izak

Paul Izak was born and raised on the Hawaiian Islands and currently lives it up on the Island of Oahu.  Paul has been discovering his own voice and unique sound as a singer/songwriter since 2004.  As a young boy, Paul was no stranger to the main stage, performing as a vocal soloist in choruses since 2nd grade.   He then became an impersonator of famous artists like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Louis, and Neil Diamond.  He performed around the island with the Honolulu Boys Choir.  Through intermediate and high school years, he began to shift interests towards acting, photography, sports, & film production, his vocal talent was put aside. During these years, he began to find a new voice through his harmonica.  His inspiration came from his uncle Brian, a local blues harmonica player, and other blues musicians around the island. He quickly found a new sense of freedom through the harmonica.

During his first year of college, Paul began learning guitar and finding his own sound, which can best be described as a Folk, Blues, Rock, Reggae combination. In 2006, while living on the Island of Lana’i, Paul began playing hand drums.  This later led him to establishing a drum circle on Kailua Beach for three years. These drum circles allowed Paul to connect with the community through the freedom of unlimited creative expression weekly.  Bringing together the community in a conscious way led to the monthly Yogarden Music Gatherings, an all ages, artistic/music event.  Paul’s passion for yoga, gardening, and music set the foundation for these gatherings.

His love for music continues to grow, just like his garden. Representing a healthy and simplistic life, Paul is a believer in honoring yourself as an individual so that you may better contribute to your community through healthy sustainable practices. This is the message you get through Paul’s music, as he practices what he preaches.

After gaining traction, in early 2018 Vana Liya signed with Pepper’s LAW Records becoming the first female and first solo artist. Subsequently she released her debut single “Show Me”. Later that year, Vana visited Stick Figure’s Great Stone Studios in Oakland, CA. She recorded “Go For It” with Johnny Cosmic of Stick Figure.
