Arrested Development

Arrested Development (AD) are true trailblazers within hip-hop music. Since 1991 they’ve championed colorful sounds, while spreading a unique mixture of consciousness and musicality around the globe. Awarded as one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time VH-1. Awarded 2 MTV Awards (93), and if that wasn’t enough, their song Tennessee which was voted one of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! AD’s hit song “Mr. Wendal“ brought much needed attention to the plight of the homeless and the group gave half of that singles royalties to the National Coalition of the Homeless. Their dance smash, “People Everyday” (Metamorphosis mix) addresses the tension between ignorance & consciousness, while paying homage to Sly & the Family Stone. Despite their topics being an analyzation and celebration of black reality in America, people of all backgrounds relate to Arrested Development’s music. The Grammy’s we’re among the first to “get it!” AD won two Grammy awards (1993 – Best New Artist & Best Rap Single – Tennessee), Rollingstone Magazine named them band of the year in 1992 and they were the first, and last rap group (thus far), to win the Grammy’s coveted Best New Artist award. Arrested Development was the first African – American artists to donate to the African National Congress(ANC) to end the pains of apartheid. Sharing the stage with Nelson Mandela in South Africa (1994) was a highlight for the group! Their representation of eclectic African clothing, diverse beats & Pan-African lyrics, flew in the face of the mostly celebrated thug, pimp, sex-craved jezebel and drug-dealer stereotypes. Arrested Development was the first ever in rap music to have an elder (Baba Oje) who brought wisdom to the youthful energy of the group. AD was the 2nd ever in hip-hop to tour with a live band, to have female and male members, plus boast a message of hope, change and celebrating life.

FRIDAY PRE-PARTY

The Polish Ambassador

& The Diplomatic Scandal

Last year we made a deep connection with The Polish Ambassador. He was blown away by our family and its safe to say, by the righteous get-down that he inspired, the feeling is mutual. He reached out to us looking for support for his new electro / live band mix that he is presenting “The Polish Ambassador and the Diplomatic Scandal. Stoked to be some of the first heads and asses to have the honor of being moved by this.

The Polish Ambassador (real name David Sugalski) is raising the bar for what it means to be a professionally touring musician. Sure, the electronic musician lays claim to producing the sweetest beats this side of the Milky Way Galaxy, but the world’s funkiest diplomat is also using his popularity to steer the millennial generation toward a nourishing and sustainable way of relating with art, community and the planet. From birthing the Permaculture Action Movement (a movement where the energy of show/festival goers is catalyzed into community action), to launching a Village Building Convergence in his hometown to creating a program where nutritious beverage options are available at music venues on a routed TPA tour, the ambassador is using his clout to make real, tangible change, and along the way inspiring hundreds of thousands.

TREVOR HALL

Raised on an island in South Carolina, singer/songwriter Trevor Hall realized at a young age that music was more than just a passion – it was, rather, his life’s art. At sixteen, he recorded his first album, soon after which he left South Carolina for Idyllwild Arts Academy in California where he studied classical guitar and was introduced to the practices of yoga and meditation, which would greatly influence his life and his music.

Hall’s music, a blend of roots and folk music, is imbued with a deep love of Eastern Mysticism. This powerful symbiosis fostered a deep connectivity with his growing fan base and Trevor quickly matured into a leader of the burgeoning conscious musical community. Along with numerous pilgrimages to India, he has also completed a series of sold-out tours and collaborations with artists such as Steel Pulse, Ziggy Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Matisyahu, Michael Franti, Xavier Rudd and Nahko & Medicine for the People.

Mike Love

In this modern age of music, genres blend together as naturally as the river flows into the sea.  With the expansive library of all the music of the world from every time period at our fingertips, creative artists seem to be more and more liberated from the archaic mentality of being pigeonholed into one genre or demographic.  Mike Love is at the forefront of this movement.  With a foundation rooted in the spirituality and message-based music of Reggae and Rastafari, he blends the sounds of progressive and classic rock, pop, R & B, soul, blues, flamenco, jazz and so much more.  Healing is at the core of his music.  With ever evolving live performances, Love keeps his organically grown fanbase returning again and again to witness the evolution of tried and true fan favorites, and the ever-expanding repertoire of new music that is constantly surfacing.  Fans often leave live performances remarking about how they have just been to church, or had a bad day turned around.

Currently, he has formed a super-band, hand-picked from all of the top musicians he’s worked with over the years, dubbed aptly, Mike Love and the Full Circle.  They have honed their skills and come together as a tight unit at home on O’ahu and have now begun to tour, taking Love’s music to even greater heights.  As they prepare to return to the studio in 2018, we can anticipate that the new album they are concocting will be the most dynamic, heartfelt and spirited offering yet.  In the years to come we can only expect more growth, more innovation, and of course, more Love.

THE RETURN OF

Lunar Funk Theory

Lunar Funk Theory is a name you may not have heard for a while, but as the moon above, you will feel the gravity when they circle around again. Hailing from Sioux Falls SD, Lunar Funk Theory had been around the Midwest a time or two before going on hiatus in 2012. But the music didn’t stop there. The band has continued their musical journey through a variety of outlets. Most predominately, front-man Lee Walsh, better known now by his solo act “El Dub”, has toured the country keeping the spirit of Lunar Funk Theory alive for the last 6 years.

Lunar Funk Theory has always been known for their high energy shows that blend rock, reggae, and funk into cosmic rays that feed off the energy of the crowd. Inspired by last August’s incredible Solar Eclipse, we decided it was time to wipe the moon dust off the old set list, and bring the funk back to the people.

Best enjoyed in close proximity to your friends, we invite you to join us, once again, in our favorite place on Earth, Shangri-La. Together we can move oceans.

Gypse Freq Circus

We are Gypse Freq Circus and we think music is the common thread that holds all humans together. Taking our name from the word gypsy, meaning a nomadic or free-spirited person, we are a live EDM band seeking to incorporate all genres of music and performance art to create a unique experience for the observer. Our group is the concept of producer and bassist Sunshine and production manager Kallie. Since then, we’ve grown to include Laura on vocals, CJ on percussion, and Ash on violin and guitar. We are fortunate to be able to share our creative visions with you through the help of so many talented individuals, on and off the stage. Together we are inclusive, experimental, whimsical and fun. Everyone is part of our beautiful mosaic, including you! Being human is a complex set of experiences and while many experiences are successful and happy, some are not. We find value in expressing the emotions that are part of all those experiences. We hope our music speaks to people from all walks of life. If we all stand in a circle, we know we’ll find far more similarities drawing us together than pulling us apart.

SisterTree

Picture a night of tunes and friendships new and old, seeking the alchemy of fulfillment in the glow of comrades circled in song. Twists and turns of phrase and plot brought Dee and Kerri together in just such a setting. Coiling cables, hoisting speakers, and buckling shoes and giving their all, they have come a long way from whiffling sound effects and harmonies in studio with local singer-songwriter Shawn McBurnie and his MN Arts Board grant project titled “Fearsome Critters,” where they re-imagined the tall tales of river workers, loggers, mill workers and miners as fodder for song. Where that ensemble brought new breath and strains to yarns that had grown little-known since they were first spun by our forebears, SisterTree has come to animate and deluge with sound and solace the worker, the protector, the wearied parent, the lonesome soul, the rowdy friend, and the kindred spirit. In their musing of post-mythic Northwoods revivalism, Kerri and Dee found magic in the spontaneous harmony line–and together they conjure something new.
